Frequently asked questions

What is Escendant?

Escendant is an app that helps people capture the stories, memories, voices and messages that matter. It preserves family history, personal legacy and human connection in a way that’s easy, secure and meaningful.

Who is Escendant for?

Anyone who wants to save the memories, moments and stories from their life:

  • Families wanting to preserve memories
  • Parents capturing messages for future generations
  • Individuals documenting their own legacy
  • Anyone wanting to record and add context to old documents and photos

If it’s important to you, it belongs in Escendant.

How does Escendant work?

You record memories (we call them Engrams) in the Escendant app by writing, talking or adding any media (photos, documents, videos etc), then save them to your Escendant account as an Engram. Each Engram is stored safely and can be shared with the people you choose, or kept private.

Is Escendant easy for older people to use?

Yes. The app is easy for anyone to use after a few minutes of familiarisation. Escendant features a co-manager function that lets trusted people co-manage an account if required.

What makes Escendant different from just using a phone’s voice recorder or journal app?

Escendant isn’t simply a recorder or a journal; it’s a guided storytelling and biography-creating experience.

With Escendant you get:

  • Thoughtful prompts every day that draw out meaningful stories
  • A chat-based interface that makes memory recall and storytelling an enjoyable experience
  • A private, secure archive that lets you share specific Engrams with others if you wish
  • A tool built specifically to preserve your legacy, memory and connection

Escendant helps people capture stories they’d never think to tell on their own.

Is my data secure?

Absolutely. Your Engrams are encrypted, stored securely and only shared with the people you choose. You remain in full control of your content at all times.

Can I share Engrams with family and friends?

Yes. You can share individual Engrams or entire collections with trusted people, even if they don’t have the app.

What kinds of things should I record with Escendant?

Anything you’d want the future you, or future generations, to know about you:

  • Childhood memories
  • Stories about loved ones
  • Advice or life lessons
  • Messages for children or grandchildren
  • Personal reflections
  • Voices and laughter you never want to lose
  • Professional or personal knowledge you want to pass on

If it matters to you - turn it into an Engram.

Can I use Escendant for someone else, such as an elderly relative?

Yes. We offer a sub-account function that lets you create an account for anyone unable to create their own. This can include:

  • A child (13 and under) — typically your own child, or a child you are a legal guardian for
  • Someone incapacitated — typically a relative who does not have the capacity to run their own account
  • A deceased family member — this allows you to collate Engrams related to someone no longer with us such as a passed grandparent.
What happens to my account if something happens to me?

You can designate trusted contacts (a Trustee) who will help manage your account if you are unable to do so. Any Engrams you have made public will remain accessible after your passing.

Does Escendant work offline?

No. You need an internet connection for the app to work.

Can I edit or delete Engrams?

Yes. You’re always in control. You can rename, reorganise or delete any Engram in your archive.

Is the app free?

Escendant is free to download and start using, we give new users some credits to get them started. Creditd are spent when you perform certain tasks in the app. You can purchase more credits via the app as a recurring subscription or a one-off payment.
